  Fielding

  Fielder's objective:

To save his side as many runs as possible and to go for all possible catches, even half-chances.

Remember:
'A run saved is a run made'
'Catches win matches'

Fielding contributes to the team's effort by saving runs, running out and catching batsmen, pressurising opponents into making mistakes and giving moral support to the bowlers. A good fielder is always 'in' the game. A team's efficiency is often reflected in its fielding. All eleven can contribute directly on the field, a catch well taken, a stinging shot stopped on the square and a run out effected with a fine throw can well turn a match around. Many an entertaining match has been spoilt by slovenly or untidy fielding. The fielding done smoothly and efficiently can always bring out the best in the bowlers.

Qualities that a good fielder should possess include:

Footwork
Balance
Physical fitness
Mental alertness
Should not relax on the field
An all-rounder who can field both close to the wicket and the in or out field

General hints on fielding

1.
Always keep your eyes on the ball - whether fielding a ball on the ground or catching it.

2.   Move quickly behind the line of the ball and as far as possible towards it even as it is coming to you.

3.   Get your body in behind the line of the ball as second line of defence to your hands.

4.   Whenever any fielder throws the ball to the keeper or to the bowler's end, fielders in suitable positions should provide a backup to prevent overthrows.

5.  For close-in fielders, the body should be balanced and ready to take off in any direction to catch the ball. Stay down half-crouched until the ball has arrived at the wicketkeeper's hands or played away by the batsman. Keep your head still and watch the ball or, when at first slip or when wicketkeeping, watch the outer edge of the bat.

6.  Fielders in the close-in positions on the leg side, square or in front of the wicket, must switch their eyes to the batsman just before the bowler releases the ball.

7.  Fielders not in close catching position must walk in with the bowler when he is running in to bowl. This will get them off the mark to move towards the ball hit in their direction.

8.  Let your hand give with the ball. Don't grab the ball, otherwise the chances are it will spill out almost as often as it stays in the palm.

9.  Bend both hips and knees so that your head is down when you are about to field the ball.

10.  Get quickly into a side-on position, so that the ball can be thrown to either end for a run out or return to the wicketkeeper.

11.  While fielding backfoot should be side-on to the ball.

12.  Always try to throw the ball on the full to the wicketkeeper or bowler.

13.  While throwing to the stumps: Aim, get the ball in as quickly and as straight as possible.

14.  Hit the stumps to effect a run out only when there is no time for the wicketkeeper or the bowler to reach the wicket. Not hitting the stumps may lead to overthrows or on hitting the wicket the ball may deflect for more runs.

15.  When taking a catch, keep the ball for a few seconds to show that you have it under control. Don't throw it prematurely in the air to celebrate the catch, you might lose your grip on the ball resulting in a not out decision.
