  Grip

How you grip the ball determines what kind of bowling you will do. Here we explain the following grips:

  Basic Grip
  Leg Break
  Off Break
  Out-swing
  In-swing

Basic Grip

The ball is held between the first two fingers and the thumb.
The fingers are placed either side of the seam, which is upright.
The thumb and third finger support the ball.
The ball should be held in the fingers and not in the palm of the hand.

  Leg Break

Top joint of thumb and first two fingers are spaced naturally apart, gripping across the seam.
Third finger cups ball and lies along seam to impart the leg spin.
Wrist is bent inwards and only flips straight as ball is delivered.
Third and fourth fingers flick upwards and forwards, whilst thumb side of hand cuts downwards.

  Off Break

Top joint of first finger, gripping across seam, is main spinning 'lever'.
Second finger, widely spaced, also grips acros seam.
  Thumb lies naturally across seam.
As the ball is bowled, the wrist is 'cocked' back and flicks forward with the first finger dragging sharply downwards and thumb flipping upwards.
After delivery, hand cuts across body and finishes with palm pointing upwards.

  Out-swing

Seam of ball is positioned so that at moment of delivery it points in direction of first slip.
Two fingers are on top of ball on each side of seam: right side of thumb lies on bottom side of seam directly beneath them.

  In-swing

Seam of the ball is pointed slightly towards fine leg.
Second finger lies along side of seam with first finger alongside the other side of the seam, ball of thumb is on bottom side of seam directly beneath them.
