  Batting

  Batsman's objective:

Every time he walks out to the crease, the batsman should aim to be not out at the end of the innings and to have scored as many runs as possible. The score is the real criterion of a batsman, and if he is not competent to make runs -- however difficult it may be to get his wicket -- it is a mere wastage of time. Batting is a combination of a variety of aspects including talent, patience, timing and temperament.

  General hints on batting

Batsman must be fully equipped. The equipment that he is using should be of right size and right weight.
Sit out in the light in which you will have to play -- note behavior of pitch.
Take guard before receiving the first ball by holding the bat upright in front of the stumps.
Before facing the first ball note the position of the fielders.
Do stretching exercises before starting your innings.
Get into line -- well forward or well back and use your foot.

It is important for a batsman to know the meaning of line and length and the various deliveries to cope with.
Line: The vertical plane of the ball -- direction in which the ball goes.
