We were outplayed - Smith
DURBAN: THE PROTEAS Standard Bank ODI squad will have to turn things around very quickly if they are to get back into the MTN series against Australia.
The Australians thoroughly outplayed the Proteas in the first of five matches at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead on Friday night, winning by the runaway margin of 141 runs with almost 17 overs to spare.
The second match will be played at SuperSport Park on Sunday as a day match.
It was Australia’s highest ever winning margin against South Africa, beating the victory by 103 runs at Sydney in the 1993/94 season.
“We were outplayed in all departments,” commented captain Graeme Smith. “But this defeat does not turn us into a bad side and I am confident that we will be able to bounce back on Sunday.”
Smith admitted that the absence of the injured Jacques Kallis had affected the balance of the side but was not prepared to make any excuses. “There are other good players in the side and they must do the job.”
He added that the team had given away too many runs in the last 10 overs even allowing for the fact that Australia held their batting power play back until this stage of the innings.
Michael Hussey produced a man-of-the-match performance with the bat (83 not out off 79 balls, 6x4, 2x6) to set up Australia’s big total and, apart from a partnership of 74 between Herschelle Gibbs and Smith, who marked his return with an innings of 52 off 56 balls, there was little substance to the home side’s batting. |
