New Zealand take control of second Test against India

NAPIER: New Zealand picked up the prized scalp of Virender Sehwag to take firm control of the second cricket Test match as India were foced to follow on after being dismissed for 305 on the third day at the McLean Park here on Saturday.

Patel trapped Sehwag in front for 22 as India reached 47 for 1 in their second innings, still 267 runs behind New Zealand's first innings of 619 for 9 declared.

Earlier, Chris Martin tore through the Indian middle order with three quick strikes either side of tea as India lost its last six wickets for 59 runs. Jesse Ryder, the man with the golden arm, dismissed Rahul Dravid for 83 in his first over. Martin then dismissed Yuvraj Singh (0), Dinesh Karthik (6) and a well set Laxman (76) - all caught behind in the slip cordon chasing at wide deliveries, while O'Brien cleaned up India's tail - picking up Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan off consecutive balls as India crashed from 253 for four to 305 all out.

India trail NZ by 267 runs with nine wickets in hand

Day three highlights:

# Tendulkar, during the course of his 49 off 65 balls, became the first batsman from India to amass 700 runs in New Zealand. In fifteen innings, he has aggregated 707 (ave.50.50), including two hundreds and three half-centuries.

# Tendulkar became the first batsman to complete 7000 runs on foreign soil - 7030 in 143 innings (89 Tests), includng 24 centuries and 28 half-centuries at an average of 54.49.

# For the fourth wicket, Dravid and Sachin put on 87 - India's highest at McLean Park, Napier, beating the 2 between Dilip Vengsarkar and Manoj Prabhakar in 1989-90.

# VVS Laxman's 76 off 149 balls is his best ever score in New Zealand, beating the 30 in the first Test at Hamilton.

# Laxman's first half-century in New Zealand is his third against New Zealand.

# Dravid and Laxman were associated in a stand of 81 for the fifth wicket - India's best at McLean Park, outstripping the 58 between Prabhakar and Tendulkar in 1989-90.

# Yuvraj got his first duck against New Zealand - sixth overall.

# In 16 Tests away from home, Yuvraj has amassed 581 runs at an average of 27.66, including two centuries and one fifty.

# Harbhajan Singh (18) posted his second highest score against New Zealand - his best is 20 at Hamilton in December 2002.

# India's 305 off 93.5 overs is their lowest total at McLean Park, Napier.

# New Zealand have enforced a follow-on against India for the third time in New Zealand and the fifth time overall.

# Chris Martin (3/89) was the most successful New Zealander bowler in India's total of 305. In the process, he has registered his best bowling performance against India, bettering his 3 for 98 at Hamilton last week.
