Boucher, Morkel finish superbly

JOHANNESBURG: MARK BOUCHER and Albie Morkel produced a superb finishing burst to give the Proteas a four wicket victory over Australia with four balls to spare in their Standard Bank International Pro20 at the Liberty Life Wanderers Stadium on Friday night.

Set a target of 167 for victory the home side looked in all kinds of trouble when they lost their first five wickets cheaply and left themselves needing 80 for victory in the last seven overs.

Morkel was the scourge of Australia in the successful ODI campaign ‘down under’ and he provided more of the same when he smashed his way to 37 off 19 balls with four fours and two sixes. The one six flicked with contemptuous ease over deep midwicket, was one of the biggest seen at this ground for some time.

Boucher was almost as effective with his unbeaten 36 off 22 balls with five fours.

One had to feel sorry for Australian all-rounder David Hussey who made 88 off 44 balls (five fours and six sixes) and also claimed the wickets of Hashim Amla and Vaughn van Jaarsveld. It was enough to earn him the Standard Bank Master Blaster award but not enough to get his side across the line to victory.

Apart from the contributions of the experienced ‘old hands’ the Proteas could take a lot of encouragement from the bowling performances of Robin Peterson (3/30, including a brilliant return catch) and Wayne Parnell (2/29).

“I thought we played at about 80 percent of our ability,” commented captain Johan Botha. “This victory will give us good momentum for the second match on Sunday as well as the approaching MTN ODI series.

“There is always room for improvement and we will probably also try a few other tactical variations in Sunday’s game.”

The Proteas are likely to give game time to the four players who missed out in this match which will mean first international caps for Roelof van der Merwe and Yousuf Abdulla
