Taylor and Ryder lead Black Caps fightback, Injured Dhoni ruled out

NAPIER: Ross Taylor and Jesse Ryder scored battling hundreds as Black Caps recovered from a precarious 23 for three to reach 351 for 4 on the opening day of the second cricket Test match against India here on Thursday.

Taylor (151) rode his luck to reach his hundred off 151 balls with 18 hits to the fence, while Ryder (136 not out) scored his second consecutive Test hundred off 147 balls with 14 fours and one six. The duo put on a record 271-run fourth wicket partnership to put the Black Caps in a strong position. The pair came together with New Zealand struggling at 23-3, having lost all three wickets for two runs in the space of 18 deliveries after New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori won the toss and elected to bat first on a traditionally placid batting pitch at the McLean Park.

Team India captain MS Dhoni was ruled out of the match after suffering a back injury. He was replaced by Dinesh Karthik, while Virender Sehwag took over the captaincy. Off-spinner Jeetan Patel joined the New Zealand team in place of seamer Kyle Mills and Jamie How replaced Daniel Flynn who was ruled out of the match with a bruised hand.

Tim McIntosh was the first New Zealand wicket to fall, caught behind by Karthik off Ishant Sharma for 12. Jamie How's return to the Test cricket was short lived, facing 11 deliveries for one run before he was bowled by Zaheer Khan while Martin Guptill (8) fended a rising delivery off Khan straight into the hands of Virender Sehwag at gully.

Brief Scores (Day One): New Zealand 351/4 (Ross Taylor 151, Jesse Ryder 136 not out; Zaheer Khan 2 for 94)

# Jesse Ryder (137 not out) recorded his best ever score - his second hundred in successive Tests - both against India.

# Ryder, with 260 at an average of 130.00 (Strike rate: 63.56), is the leading run-getter in the series.

# Nathan Astle was the last batsman to post hundreds for New Zealand in successive Tests - 125 vs. West Indies at Bridgetown and 103 not out at St.John's in 1995-96.

# The 271-run partnership between Ross Taylor and Jesse Ryder is New Zealand's highest for the fourth wicket, beating the 243-run partnership between Matthew Horne and Nathan Astle against Zimbabwe at Auckland in 1997-98.

# The aforesaid partnership is New Zealand's highest for any wicket against India, bettering the 231 for the first wicket between Mark Richardson and Lou Vincent in the 2003-04 Mohali Test.

# The 271-run stand is a record for any wicket at McLean Park, surpassing the 195 for the second wicket between John Wright and Geoff Howarth for New Zealand against Pakistan in 1978-79.

# New Zealand's 351 for four off 90 overs is their second best total on the first day of the Test against India - their best being 387 for nine at Auckland in 1989-90.
