Harbhajan sets up crushing win

HAMILTON: Harbhajan Singh produced his best spell overseas as India crushed New Zealand by 10 wickets in the first Test match to take a 1-0 lead in three-match series here on Saturday.

Gautam Gambhir struck a quickfire 30 off 18 balls and Rahul Dravid scored 8 not out as India raced to their target of 39 in 5.2 overs to complete a rare Test match win in New Zealand after 33 years.

Earlier, Harbhjan Singh picked up 6 for 63, his best figures overseas as the Black Caps folded for 279 in their second innings with Brendon McCullum top scoring with 84. The ninth-wicket pair of McCullum and Iain O'Brien delayed the inevitable with a 76-run stand that forced India to bat again. Sachin Tendulkar, who scored a brilliant 160 in India's first innings, was declared the man-of-the-match.

Brief Scores: India 520 and 39 for no loss (Gautam Gambhir 30 not out, Rahul Dravid 8 not out) beat New Zealand 279 and 279 (Brendon MCCullum 84, Daniel Flynn 67, Harbhajan Singh 6 for 63, Munaf Patel 2 for 60) by 10 wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match Test series

Day four highlights:

# Daniel Flynn (67 off 183 balls) posted his third fifty - all at home.

# Brendon McCullum, during the course of his first fifty against India (84) and the 13th overall, has aggregated his 2000 runs in Tests. Having already completed 100 dismissals, he is the second New Zealand wicketkeeper after Adam Parore to complete the double of 2000 runs + 100 dismissals.

# McCullum and O'Brien shared a 76-run stand for the ninth wicket - New Zealand's best against India at Hamilton, bettering the 42 between Dion Nash and Daniel Vettori in 1998-99.

# Harbhajan Singh (6/63) has recorded his best overseas figures.

# Harbhajan's bowling figures are the third best by an Indian bowler in New Zealand - the top two being 8 for 76 by Erapalli Prasanna at Auckland in 1975-76 and 6 for 43 by Bapu Nadkarni at Wellington in 1967-68.

# Harbhajan became the first and only Indian bowler to bag six wickets in an innings at Seddon Park. His excellent figures are the best by any spinner at Seddon Park, bettering Vettori's 5 for 84 against Sri Lanka in 1996-97.

# Sachin Tendulkar has got his 12th MOM award, which is the best tally for India.
