Batsmen put India in commanding position

HAMILTON: Fifties from Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir and Rahul Dravid saw India reach within a run of New Zealand's first innings of 279 when bad light stopped play 6.1 overs before the scheduled close on the second day of the first cricket Test at the Seddon Park here on Thursday.

Sachin Tendulkar, who survived a dropped catch on 14, was unbeaten on 70 with Yuvraj Singh not out eight as India reached 278 for four when bad light stopped play. Earlier, Gambhir smashed 72 and Dravid a watchful 66 to put India in a strong position after Virender Sehwag was run out for 24. However, both batsmen were dismissed against the run of play - Gambhir caught behind off Martin and Dravid bowled by O'Brien.

Tendulkar and VVS Laxman (30) added 61 for the fourth wicket before Chris Martin struck with the new ball removing a well set Laxman with an away going delivery. Martin ended the day with figures of two for 53.

Brief Scores: India 278 for 4 (Sachin Tendulkar 70 not out, Gautam Gambhir 72, Rahul Dravid 66; Chris Martin two for 53) trail New Zealand 279 by one run
