Vettori and Ryder smash tons to revive Black Caps
HAMILTON: New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori smashed his third Test century and shared a valuable 186-run seventh wicket partnership with Jesse Ryder, who scored his maiden Test hundred as the Black Caps recovered from a precarious 61 for six to reach 279 on the opening day of the first cricket Test match against India here on Wednesday.
The seventh-wicket partnership took the Black Caps total to 246 before twin strikes by Munaf Patel removed Vettori - caught behind for 118, and Kyle Mills - clean bowled for a golden duck. Jesse Ryder reached his maiden hundred with a pulled four off Ishant Sharma before a wild swipe ended his innings on 102.
India reached 29 for no loss in seven overs with Virender Sehwag (22) and Gautam Gambhir (6) at the crease when stumps were drawn on the opening day.
Earlier, Ishant Sharma and Zaheer Khan justified MS Dhoni's decision to bowl first on a lively Seddon Park track, as the duo rocked the Black Caps top order. Zaheer started the Kiwi slide with two wickets in four balls, and Ishant came back to grab three in his second spell to put the home team firmly on the backfoot in the pre-lunch session.
Zaheer accounted for Martin Guptill, who fended an away going delivery straight into the hands of Rahul Dravid at third slip. Dravid juggled the ball but took a good catch at the second attempt, to equal Mark Waugh's World Record of 181 Test catches. Daniel Flynn was unlucky to be dismissed - nicking one down the leg side off Zaheer for Dhoni to take a good diving catch.
Ishant, who looked a bit rusty in his opening spell, struck gold in his second spell by first picking up Macintosh - caught by Sehwag at Gully. Sharma then cleaned up a well set Ross Taylor for 18, before James Franklin was sent packing by Simon Taufel for a duck, though replays clearly showed that the ball brushed the back pad and not the bat.
Munaf Patel, who was included ahead of L Balaji, justified the decision with the key wicket of dangerous Brendon McCullum just before lunch but the seventh wicket record partnership between Vettori and Ryder got New Zealand right back into the match. Ishant Sharma was the pick of the Indian bowlers with 4 for 73 while fellow pacemen Munaf Patel and Zaheer Khan picked up three and two wickets respectively as the fast bowlers accounted for nine Kiwi wickets, with Harbhajan Singh picking up one wicket - that of Iain O'Brien.
Day one scores: New Zealand 279 in 78.2 overs (Daniel Vettori 118, Jesse Ryder 102; Ishant Sharma 4 for 73, Munaf Patel 3 for 49, Zaheer Khan 2 for 70) v India 29 for no loss (Virender Sehwag 22 not out, Gautam Gambhir 6 not out). India trail New Zealand by 250 runs.
Day one highlights:
# By taking Guptill's catch, Dravid has now recorded the same tally as Australia's Mark Waugh, sharing a world record for most catches (181) in Tests.
# Jesse Ryder has equalled a Test record for most fifty-plus (4) in succession for New Zealand, joining Bevan Congdon (twice), Jeremy Coney, Ken Rutherford, Martin Donnelly and Bert Sutcliffe. In his previous three knocks had registered 89 against West Indies at Dunedin and 57 & 59 not out against West Indies at Napier during the 2008-09 season.
# Ryder's 102 off 162 balls is his first ever hundred in Test Cricket, bettering the 91 against Bangladesh at Dhaka in October 2008.
# Ryder and Vettori were involved in a 186-run stand for the seventh wicket - New Zealand's best against India.
# Mahendra Singh Dhoni became the fourth Indian wicketkeeper to complete the double of 1000 runs + 100 dismissals. Dhoni has joined Syed Kirmani (198), Kiran More (130) and Nayan Mongia (107).
# Dhoni holds an Indian record for taking fewest matches (36) to perform the wicketkeepers' double.
# Daniel Vettori recorded his third hundred in Tests - his first ever against India.
# Daniel Vettori's 118 off 164 balls is his first hundred as skipper, outstripping his 94 against Bangladesh at Wellington in 2007-08.
# Vettori is the fifth captain for New Zealand to register a hundred against India, joining Graham Dowling, Geoff Howarth, Glenn Turner (two) and John Wright (two).
# New Zealand's innings of 279 off 78.2 overs is the lowest total to include two centuries. |
