Ryder powers Black Caps to consolation win

AUCKLAND: A fine all-round performance by Jesse Ryder powered Black Caps to a consolation win in the fifth and final ODI against India at the Eden Park here on Saturday.

Man of the match Ryder took three for 29 off nine overs to restrict India to 149 all out in 36.3 overs, and then scored a typical quickfire 63 off 49 balls as New Zealand raced to their target in 23.2 overs to win by eight wickets. India won the series 3-1 after securing victories in Napier, Christchurch and Hamilton, while the second match at Wellington was washed out.

Martin Guptill (57 not out) finished the match in style - hitting Ishant Sharma's first two deliveries off his eighth over for boundaries. Guptill brought up his fifty with a six over mid wicket before finishing the game with a pulled four over square leg.

Guptill and Ross Taylor (28 not out) added 58 runs unbroken for the third wicket to take the Black Caps home.

Earlier, Rohit Sharma top scored for India with an unbeaten 43 while Virender Sehwag contributed 40 from 27 balls but a middle order collapse saw India lose its last nine wickets for 84 runs.

The National Bank Test series starts in Hamilton on Wednesday.
