Sehwag ton sets up crushing win
HAMILTON: Virender Sehwag smashed the fastest ODI hundred for India as the visitors crushed New Zealand by 84 runs under D/L method in the rain-truncated fourth ODI at Seddon Park here on Wednesday.
With this victory, India registered its maiden ODI series win in New Zealand. Sehwag smashed 6 sixes and 14 fours in his 74-ball 125 while Gambhir hit six fours in his 63 off 67 balls.
Set a revised target of 220 for victory from 36 overs after the fifth rain delay, India raced to 201 without loss midway through the 24th over when play was finally called off.
Sehwag broke the long standing Indian record of Mohammad Azharuddin who scored a hundred off 62 balls also against New Zealand at Baroda in 1988.
Earlier, reeling at 175/5, the Kiwi innings was revived by an unbeaten 95-run stand between Peter McGlashan and Grant Elliott. McGlashan hit a six and 6 fours in his 42-ball 56, while Elliott scored an unbeaten 35 off 27 balls with the help of a six and 3 fours as the Black Caps posted 270 for 5 in 47 overs.
The final match is in Auckland on Saturday.
