Tendulkar ton sets up 58-run win
CHRISTCHURCH: Sachin Tendulkar posted his first One-day International hundred in New Zealand to power India to a 58-run victory against the Black Caps in the third ODI at the AMI Stadium here on Sunday.
Tendulkar stroked his way to 163 off 133 balls as India posted a mammoth 392 for four in 50 overs. Tendulkar struck 16 fours and five sixes before he was forced to retire hurt after pulling a stomach muscle.
India then restricted the home team to 334 in 45.1 overs to take an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the five-match series. India won the first match in Napier by 53 runs while second match was washed out in Wellington on Friday.
The Black Caps threatened the Indian total with Jesse Ryder hitting his maiden ODI hundred - 105 off 80 balls. Ryder and captain Brendon McCullum (71) added 166 for the opening wicket in 22 overs before McCullum was run out, which triggered a mini collapse as the Black Caps lost wickets at regular intervals and went down by 58 runs despite a brave 32-ball 58 from Kyle Mills.
Earlier, Tendulkar shared two crucial hundred plus partnerships - 138 with Yuvraj Singh (87) and 135 with captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (68) as India posted its highest total in ODIs against New Zealand.
Suresh Raina ended the innings in style - smashing a quickfire 38 off 18 balls with five sixes. Yuvraj blasted 10 boundaries and six sixes in his 60-ball innings while Indian captain MS Dhoni hit six fours and two sixes in his 58-ball knock.
The teams now move to Hamilton for the fourth ODI on Wednesday, March 11.
