India clinch series opener

NAPIER: India won the rain-affected opening One-Day International against New Zealand by 53 runs at McLean Park here tonight.

Set a revised target of 216 from 28 overs after a second rain delay, New Zealand could only muster 162 for nine.

Earlier, India posted 273 for four in their innings with captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni top scoring with an unbeaten 84.

Harbhajan Singh took three wickets in four balls as New Zealand collapsed. The spinner ended with figures of three for 27.

The second match of the five-game series is in Wellington on Friday. NZC

# Harbhajan, with Brendon McCullum's dismissal, took his 50th catch in Limited-Overs Internationals.
